How to Blend Effect with Background in Photoshop

Learn How to Blend Effect with Background in Photoshop. The following will explain how to mix Photoshop sketch effects with backgrounds so that you get a transition effect from the original photo to the sketch. The simple way is to create a layer for transitions and a layer for sketches. And between the background which is the original photo with the transition layer, we create a new layer for applying the gradient.

Step 1: Open your Photo

Select menu File>Open. Select your photo from the Open dialog box then click the Open button. The photo source for this Photoshop tutorial is taken from Microsoft Office Images.
The photo that we will give the effect.

Step 2: Create a layer for the transition effect

Press Ctrl+J to duplicate the Background layer then change the blend mode to Multiply. To make it easier rename it to transition. Double click the background copy text then type a new name: transition and press Enter. I will give a black and white sketch effect so select the Image>Adjustments>Black and White menu. In the Black and White dialog box, click the OK button. The transition layer is now black and white but the photo looks a bit darker due to the effect of the Multiply blend mode.

Step 3: Create a sketch effect

Next create a sketch effect. Click the Transition layer to activate it then duplicate it by pressing Ctrl+J. Double click the Transition copy layer name then rename it to sketch. Press the Enter key. Next change the blend mode to Color Dodge. Perform an inversion of the sketch, by selecting the Image>Adjustments>Invert menu. And finally apply a filter with the Filter>Other>Minimum menu. In the minimum dialog box, enter a value of 1 or 2 pixels and click the OK button.

Step 4: Create a gradient

We will create a gradient between the background layer and the transition. For that, click the Background layer and then click the Create a New Layer icon at the bottom of the panel. A new layer will be formed between the background and transition layers. Double click the name Layer1 then type gradient and press Enter. Reset the foreground/background color to default by pressing the D key. Then press the keyboard Ctrl + backspace to fill it with a background color that is white. Up here you should have seen the black and white sketch effect.

Step 5: Apply a gradient

With the gradient layer positioned, click the Add Layer Mask icon at the bottom of the panel. Click the layer mask box to make sure it's active. Press the D key to reset the foreground/background color to default. Click the Gradient Tool icon. Set it to Linear Gradient and select the foreground to background gradient in the gradient dropdown. For more details see the picture.

The last step is to apply the gradient tool by clicking on the left part of the image then dragging to the right to the middle, then release the mouse. You can drag while holding down the Shift key to keep the gradient line straight.
Click then drag to apply the gradient.

After releasing the mouse you can see the transition effect from sketch to photo background.
