How To Create Silhouette In Photoshop

How To Create Silhouettes In Photoshop
Here's a tutorial on how to create a silhouette in Photoshop. In this tutorial I will create a silhouette of a person jumping with a house and a full moon as the background. The trick is to select the photo and then fill it with black. If you want a silhouette that still has texture, then the option is to use the Image>Adjustments>Threshold command. Let's get started!

1. Open background photo then make selection.
Choose File>Open to open the photo into Photoshop. Press Ctrl+J to duplicate the layer. Make a selection on the background using the Quick Selection Tool. Grab the Quick selection tool.
The Quick selection tool.

Click Add to selection, set the brush size.
Click Add to selection, set the brush size.

Make sure the duplicate layer is active. Click the Quick Selection Tool icon, on the toolbar click the Add to selection icon, then click the mouse on the photo background to start making selections. You can use the open bracket key [ to reduce the brush size and the close bracket key ] to increase the brush size. Click the photo to make a selection. Meanwhile, to delete the selection, click and drag the mouse while holding down the Alt key. When finished making the selection, create a mask by clicking the layer mask icon or selecting the menu Layer> Layer Mask> Hide Selection. The photos used for this Photoshop tutorial I took from Pixabay.com.
Open the background photo then make a selection and mask.

2. Open another photo, make selection, then move to background photo.
Select File>Open to open the object photo then make a selection using the selection tool. I'll be using the Magic Wand Tool and the Quick Selection Tool.
Open the object photo then make a selection.

When you're done making the selection, use the Move Tool to move it to the background photo. Or you can copy it by selecting Edit>Copy, moving to the background photo and selecting Edit>Paste.

3. Do step 2 if there are any other objects you want to add.

4. Adjust threshold in photo background.
To create a silhouette, click the background photo thumbnail (not the layer mask thumbnail) then select Layer>New Adjustments Layer>Threshold. Please set the Threshold slider, click the clipping mask icon and then click the OK button. Do the same for the other object layers. You can give additional outer glow by selecting Layer>Layer Style>Outer Glow menu.
Apply a threshold.

5. Adjust threshold for the Moon.
Now we create the silhouette of the moon. Click the moon layer then select Layer> New Adjustments Layer> Threshold. Please set the Threshold slider and click the OK button when finished. Don't forget to click the clip mask icon so that the threshold setting is only applied to the layer below it, not to all layers. You can give additional outer glow, by selecting Layer> Layer Style> Outer Glow.

6. Fill the man with black.
Click the jump person layer thumbnail while holding down the Ctrl key, to display the selection. Then select Edit> Fill, select black and then click the OK button. Now the silhouettes of people jumping have been formed. Press Ctrl+D to deselect. Go to Layer>Layer Style>Outer Glow to give it an extra outer glow.

7. Create a layer for the background and give it a gradient color.
Choose Layer>New Layer to create a new layer. Place it in the lowest position. Click the Gradient Tool icon.
The Gradient Tool.

Click the radial gradient icon, click edit gradient.

Then please select the left gradient color and the right gradient color. I'll choose white for the left gradient and red for the right gradient.
