In today’s tutorial, we will be exploring how to create a stunning transparent water splash effect in Photoshop. Follow along as we use filters, adjustment layers, and blending modes to transform a bird into water. By carefully applying filters to individual areas of the bird, we can achieve a realistic and captivating result.

Step 1: Open Your Image
Choose File>Open (Ctrl+O) to Open up your base image. Navigate to the folder that contains your file then select the name of the file you want to open. Click Open. For this Photoshop tutorial, I'll use this image, 387369, background 2723729, water splash 3594782, 3594780, 3594783, downloaded from Pixabay.
Step 2: Grab The Pen Tool
Grab the Pen tool by selecting it from the toolbar on the left.
Make sure Path and Combine Shapes is chosen from the menu in the options bar.
Step 3: Cut Out The Bird From its Background
Use The Pen Tool To Trace Around The Subject. Start by clicking once to place an initial anchor point. Continue clicking to set anchor points to create a path. Close the path by position the Pen tool over the first anchor point. Click or drag to close the path.
Now simply press Ctrl+Enter to turn the path into a selection.
Then copy the selection onto its own layer by going to Layer>New>Layer via copy (or Ctrl+J). A layer with the default name of Layer 1 appears above the Background layer. You can hide the Background layer by clicking on the eye icon on the left.
Step 4: Convert To Smart Object and Duplicate six times
Convert the duplicate layer (Layer 1) to Smart Object by going to Layer>Smart Objects>Convert to Smart Object.
Duplicate it by pressing Ctrl+J six times. Naming each layer accordingly: “eye”, “beak”, “head tail”, “body”, “claw” and “tree”.
Step 5: Select Each Part of the Bird
Use a selection tool you like to select the bird eye. Go to Layer>Layer Mask>Reveal Selection or click the Add Layer Mask button in the Layers Panel.
Repeat the selections. Now select the beak, head, tail, body, claws and tree, then add a Layer Mask.
Step 6: Create New Layer For Gradient Background
Go to Layer>New>Layer. Grab the Gradient Tool on the left. In the Options Bar, click Linear and click Edit to open the Gradient Editor. Create a new Gradient using left color #0e254f and right color #2e87c5. Apply gradient to the new layer by click-drag mouse in the document window.
Step 7: Create Group for the Eye Layer
Select the eye layer. Change its blend mode to Screen then create group layer for the eye by going to Layer>Group Layers.
Step 8: Create Group for the Beak Layer
Select the beak layer. Change its blend mode to Screen then create group layer for the beak by going to Layer>Group Layers.
Step 9: Apply Filters to the Beak Layer
Go to Filter>Filter Gallery>Artistic>Plastic Wrap. Set the Higlight Strength to 10, Detail to 1 and Smoothness to 15. Click OK.
Go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Set the Radius to 3 pixels.
Step 10: Create Group for the Head Tail Layer
Select the head tail layer. Change its blend mode to Screen then create group layer for the head tail by going to Layer>Group Layers.
Step 11: Create Adjustment for the Head Tail Layer
Go to Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Hue/Saturation. Set the Saturation to -100. Click the adjustment icon to clip the adjustments to head tail layer.
Go to Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Levels. Set the center slider to 0,80 and the right slider to 255. Click the adjustment icon to clip the adjustments to head tail layer.
Step 12: Apply Filters to the Head Tail Layer
Go to Filter>Filter Gallery>Artistic>Plastic Wrap. Set the Higlight Strength to 6, Detail to 1 and Smoothness to 5.
Click OK. Go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Set the Radius to 3 pixels.
Step 13: Create Group for the Body Layer
Select the body layer. Change its blend mode to Screen then create group layer for the body by going to Layer>Group Layers.
Step 14: Create Adjustment for the Body Layer
Go to Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Hue/Saturation. Set the Saturation to -100. Click the adjustment icon to clip the adjustments to body layer.
Go to Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Levels. Set the center slider to 1, left slider to 20 and the right slider to 121. Click the adjustment icon to clip the adjustments to body layer.
Step 15: Apply Filters to the Body Layer
Go to Filter>Filter Gallery>Artistic>Plastic Wrap. Set the Higlight Strength to 6, Detail to 1 and Smoothness to 5. Click OK.
Step 16: Create Group for the Claws Layer
Select the claws layer. Change its blend mode to Screen then create group layer for the claws by going to Layer>Group Layers.
Step 17: Create Adjustment for the Claws Layer
Go to Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Levels. Set the center slider to 1, left slider to 20 and the right slider to 121. Click the adjustment icon to clip the adjustments to claws layer.
Step 18: Apply Filters to the Claws Layer
Go to Filter>Filter Gallery>Artistic>Plastic Wrap. Set the Higlight Strength to 10, Detail to 1 and Smoothness to 15. Click OK. Go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Set the Radius to 3 pixels.
Step 19: Create Group for the Tree Layer
Select the tree layer. Change its blend mode to Screen then create group layer for the tree by going to Layer>Group Layers.
Step 20: Create Adjustment for the Tree Layer
Go to Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Hue/Saturation. Tick Colorize. Click the adjustment icon to clip the adjustments to tree layer. Set the Hue to 198, Saturation to 25 and Lightness -30.
Step 21: Position Water Splash stocks
Go to File>Place and choose any water splash stock you like then click Place. Use the handles at the corner of each image to rotate and place it into the best position. Click Commit Transform or just press Enter.
Step 22: Blend the Stocks
Set the Blend Modes to Screen. Modify the stock using the Free Transform (Ctrl+T). Add a layer mask by going to Layer>Layer Mask>Reveal All. Press D to reset Foreground/Background color to default. Grab the Brush Tool (B) on the Left panel then erase the edges.
Step 23: Add Background Image
Go to File>Place and choose any background image you like then click Place. Use the handles at the corner of each image to rotate and place it into the best position. Press Enter to commit the transformation.
Step 24: Adjust the Saturation
Go to Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Hue/Saturation. Tick Colorize. Click the adjustment icon to clip the adjustments to background image layer. Set the Hue to 198, Saturation to 25 and Lightness -31.
Step 25: Add Rain Effect
Create a new layer by going to Layer>New>Layer to add rain effect.
Go to Edit>Fill, choose Black and click OK.
Go to Layer>Smart Object>Convert to Smart Object.
Choose Filter>Noise>Add Noise. Set the Amount to 100%, check the Gaussian and tick Monochromatic. Clik OK.
Set the Blend Mode to Screen.
Go to Filter>Blur>Motion blur. Set the Angle to 75 and the Distance to 50 pixels. Click OK. Double click the Levels layer and set the left slider to 92, the middle slider to 2 and the right slider to 205.
Go to Layer>New Adjustments Layer>Levels. Click the adjustment icon to clip the adjustments to rain layer.
Modify the rain layer using the Free Transform (Ctrl+T).
Step 26: Save Document
Choose File>Save (or Ctrl+S) to save your project file. In the Save As dialog box, navigate to the folder where you want to store the file. Type a name in the File Name text box and leave the default Photoshop (*.PSD;*.PDD) format. Click Save to store the image. Once you have finished, you will probably also want to use File>Save As (Shift+Ctrl+S) to export the image in a more widely used format, such as JPEG, PNG, TIFF, etc.
